Camera Crazy Conservation

Hee Haw Award

Whole nation watched in awe the CCTV footage of a  leopard  nicely walking along the corridors of a posh school in Bengaluru. 120 schools in the area have been closed for the next two days as more leopards are seen in that area.

Did anyone for a second wonder that there is no video of that whole area. How does it look? Is it Jungle? Why the entire family of leopards (I am assuming) are outside their home ground? May be they came to get their kids admitted in the school……

The area which we are talking about was small jungle even few years back. Now it’s all villa area. Real estate business has picked up that area as a villa haven. Most of the advertisements  say” Living Amidst Nature”, “Green”, “Eco-friendly”  and lots more. Major construction are planned for years to come and in the process I think we will be walking on MG road along with leopards. Most of my friends too have booked villas there as an investment. If they are reading this they should know that they are also responsible partly.

We don’t want the nature to exist anywhere other than our cameras it seems. Why else an educated man went near a cornered leopard. May be he wanted to capture/observe the face of a leopard in distress or there is some secret study going on the psychology of leopards and humans.  Brave man deserves  award. My full sympathies for the pain and trouble he took which could have been avoided had only trained forest officials were there.  Passion is great but things work out with logic and reasoning.

A better  study could have been on  loss of habitant for animals in this area. A conservationists according to me should preach and practice the preservation of natural habitat for animals rather then keep on catching homeless animals and stuffing them in ever decreasing reserved lands.

Leopards roaming into human settlements are not new. Since they are agile and adaptive animals they do venture out in search of food some times. For example Indian Institute of Bombay has several such incidents where leopard came in its campus. Had his favorite dog-meal and went back to the national park behind the institute. Friends have seen leopards in building corridors many times but no humans were injured. Reason may be the synergy with students. They come eat and go. Students too enjoy sometime off from classes.

All this brings me to the second cause of leopard activity in Bengaluru- “DOGS”. Leopards love dog meat and we are one city where dog  lovers really rule. With the ever increasing population of stray dogs this was bound to happen. Whitefield Area in Bengaluru has lots of stray dogs. In fact every area in our city has lots of dogs. This unnatural increase in the dog population is due to people feeding dogs to make even the weakest survive. Which is against the nature (same goes for humans too). Every other day newspaper carries news of someone mauled by stray dogs. Chemist’s stocks of anti-rabies vaccine gets over almost on daily basis

We have snatched their land and now the poor leopards have only option left for food is these stray dogs. Wish they would come to our society once. They will have a feast. So my nomination for the Hee-Haw award are the dog- lovers across Bengaluru.

I bet after this incident safari revenue for Bandipur National Park will decrease significantly. People have spent thousands to get a good picture of a leopard in a tree. Now they can get good snaps of it in the Whitefield area of Bengaluru  for free.  The animals in reserve forests will be spared  by such click-happy conservationists.  Why do these people start a good work with negative thoughts. That to believe that such views are not going to last and they should be the ones to capture them for future. Why cant they start with a belief that they will preserve what is left .  My  nomination for “Hee Haw” award are people who believe in   Camera-Crazy-Conservation.

Do you have any nomination in mind? Do write to me.

Nicely written. I live near to BGN park and I tell my fellow residents that we should be surprised if we spot a lost elephant, leopard or bear. Such incidents are bound to happen as we humans are encroaching upon the land of animals.

Thank you Vasudha. My sentiments exactly. As we keep on increasing our numbers this problem will keep on increasing. What angers me most is pseudo conservationists who jump in when the problem happens and not prevent it. According to me a conservationists should preach and practice the preservation of natural habitat and privacy for animals rather then keep on catching homeless animals and stuffing them in ever decreasing reserved lands.
Since you stay near BGN would you like to share something about that area for our readers. It would be very useful and informative.
